Degree Information

Our Master of Science degree in civil engineering offers thesis and non-thesis options. Both options require a total of 30 credit hours. This program provides the building blocks for the dynamic and challenging world of civil engineering. You’ll use your expertise to make an immediate impact, whether your interest is in building better roads, bridges, or other infrastructure projects and systems.

Thesis

Non-Thesis

  1. The minimum criteria for acceptance into the non-thesis MSCivE degree program are as follows:
    1. a bachelor’s degree in engineering or a closely related area of science; and,
    2. a minimum cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.0 on a scale of 4.0, 7.0 on a scale of 10.0, or 70 on a scale of 100.
  2. Students admitted under these minimum criteria:
    1. must demonstrate successful completion of the following pre-requisite courses (as well as the pre-requisites that these courses also require) with grades of C or better before enrolling in their first graduate level course:
        1. Structural Analysis 1
        2. Either Structural Design in Metals, or Reinforced Concrete Design
        3. Three different civil, environmental, or architectural engineering elective courses chosen from the following list:
          1. Fundamentals of Geotechnical Engineering
          2. Fundamentals of Environmental Engineering and Science
          3. Fundamentals of Construction Engineering & Management    
          4. Construction Materials, Properties and Testing
          5. Water Resources Engineering
          6. Transportation Engineering
    1. must prepare a “Pre-requisite Course Plan” that includes all planned pre-requisite courses before starting their first semester at S&T.
        1. This plan must be approved by the student’s academic advisor, who in so doing will also monitor the student’s academic progress to ensure that all pre-requisite requirements have been fulfilled prior to the student enrolling in their first graduate level course.
        2. Form 1 will not be officially submitted until all pre-requisite courses have been completed.
  1. These criteria apply to all non-thesis Civil MS degree program applicants in the CArE Engineering Department, regardless of an applicant’s country of origin.
  2. Applicants with a Bachelor of Science degree from an ABET accredited civil engineering, environmental engineering, or architectural engineering degree program with a GPA of 3.0 or better are excluded from the acceptance conditions specified in 2a and b.

Each year, faculty projects receive external funding from such agencies as NASA, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the National Science Foundation (NSF), the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT).
