Vision 2020 Strategic Plan

Changing the World

With the input and influence of alumni and the Academy of Civil Engineers (a select group of outstanding leaders), Missouri S&T’s Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Department has developed a strategic plan, called Vision 2020, that emphasizes program changes, greater hands-on learning opportunities, laboratory improvements, and new scholarships and fellowships.

The Vison 2020 strategic plan will add to Missouri S&T’s ability to attract top students and faculty, improve programs and facilities, enhance student learning experiences and access to world-class faculty, and increase the level and productivity of faculty research and scholarship programs.

Major Themes

To fulfill our department’s mission of shaping the future of built and natural environments of our global society through creative research and education and to position us on the front line of excellence for decades to come, the Vision 2020 strategic plan identifies the following four major themes.

These themes integrate with S&T’s campus strategic plan.

1. Program Innovations and Opportunities

Enhance our educational programs and delivery methods by offering our students innovative programs and opportunities such as integrated B.S. + M.S. programs and required experiential learning activities.

2. Program Access and Degree Value

Promote the appeal and value of our degree programs to diverse student populations by making admission to our programs more competitive, offering increased scholarship support to students who enroll in new programs (such as our integrated B.S. + M.S. program), and establishing competitive fellowships for graduate students.

3. Faculty Development and Collaborations

Champion interdisciplinary teaching and research collaborations within the department and across campus by investing in faculty development that supports the department’s education and research portfolios in areas of greatest global need.

4. Recognition and Reputation

Nurture knowledge creation, entrepreneurial enterprise and technology transfer to drive transformative change through faculty and student research that demonstrates academic distinction, value to industry, and the promise of breakthrough discoveries in targeted technical areas.
