Areas of Study
- Architectural Engineering
Graduate study focuses on design and managing of sustainable building systems in a choice of structures, construction, mechanical and electrical systems. Courses in several multi-disciplinary areas are available to develop a plan of studies that fits the interests and needs of each individual student. Research areas include energy and environmental design as it relates to green building systems, sustainable building design and interdisciplinary work. In addition to the structure’s lab (mentioned in the Structural Engineering section), the university’s solar village, with its four solar houses, provide a test bed for various sustainable building systems studies.
- Construction Materials
Graduate studies focus on a wide range of construction materials used in civil engineering projects, such as aggregate, asphalt, concrete, pavements and masonry. Typically, students obtaining graduate degrees in construction materials have a related emphasis depending on their career goals. Laboratory research is an integral part of the curriculum and experimental testing is conducted in the four individual materials laboratories: Aggregate, Asphalt, Concrete, and Load Frame. Recent research has centered on concrete mixtures, asphalt mixtures, concrete test procedures, stabilized and unstabilized base materials, subgrade soil behavior, and the design and behavior of pavement structures.
- Construction Engineering
Graduate study focuses on managing the design and construction process, including the construction engineering to get the job done. Coursework includes estimating, scheduling, contracts, productivity, and project delivery systems. Courses in Civil Engineering design areas and Engineering Management are available to develop a multidisciplinary plan of studies that fits the interests and needs of each individual student. Research areas include IT in construction, green construction, productivity, constructability and interdisciplinary work with other groups including the Center for Infrastructure Engineering Studies.
- Environmental Engineering
Current research activities encompass physical/chemical/biological wastewater treatment, hazardous waste treatment, drinking water treatment, groundwater and soil remediation, and indoor air pollution control. While the program is tailored to the individual, it provides students with a strong background in fundamental chemical, biological, physical and environmental systems. Research and laboratory work is conducted in the Environmental Research Center (ERC) on the Missouri S&T campus. The ERC has state-of-the-art instrumentation to conduct a wide range of environmental analyses. Interdisciplinary environmental research efforts with industry and faculty at other institutions are numerous.
- Geotechnical Engineering
Programs of study in this area offer courses in soil properties and their measurements, foundations, embankments, retaining structures, earth dams, soil mechanics, numerical modeling, soil dynamics and earthquake engineering. Extensive equipment is available in the three separate geotechnical engineering laboratories equipped with standard and advanced equipment, including dynamic soil testing (cyclic triaxial and resonant column). A shake table is also available for dynamic model testing. Research areas include contaminant containment and remediation, in situ soil improvement, unsaturated soil mechanics, numerical modeling of fundamental soil behavior, soil liquefaction, geotechnical earthquake engineering, and GIS and remote sensing applications.
- Structural Engineering
Graduate studies in structural engineering include experimental research in the core areas of cold-formed steel, fiber reinforced polymer composites, high performance concrete, constitutive modeling of reinforced and pre-stressed concrete, seismic behavior of structures, and damage detection. This includes the application of concrete, composite, steel, and masonry materials to structures. Analytical modeling and research is being conducted in the core areas of earthquake engineering, structural control, structural health monitoring systems, structural control, soil-structure interaction, high-speed impact of space structures, and mitigation of structural systems. Two laboratories are available for research and teaching including a new state-of-the-art 10,000 ft2 high-bay lab and 10,000 ft2 concrete lab. These research efforts and interdisciplinary activities are supported by several research centers at Missouri S&T including the Center for Infrastructure Engineering Studies, the Center for Cold Formed Steel Structures, and the Intelligent Systems Center.
- Transportation Engineering
Graduate study focuses on developing and applying advanced network models, traffic flow theories, data analytics and simulation techniques to enhance the efficiency and safety of transportation systems. It has both the “traditional" aspect of civil engineering such as transportation planning, traffic operation, signal control and system management, and the “new” and “non-traditional” aspects such as rapid and disruptive technologies being developed and introduced into the field. Examples of the later category include Google Maps, Uber, Connected and Autonomous Vehicles, Usage Based Insurance and many others. Graduate students in transportation engineering are expected to work closely with others departments such as engineering management and systems engineering, computer science, mathematics, etc.
- Water Resources Engineering
The program of studies in this area includes courses in advanced hydraulics and hydrology, advanced fluid mechanics, mathematical modeling and environmental hydraulics. Areas of research interest are watershed and urban hydrology, physical and mathematical modeling, sediment transport, river mechanics and environmental hydraulics. A hydraulics laboratory equipped with a variable-slope 70-ft flume, data acquisition computers and instrumentation for measurements is available for research and instruction. Several numerical models of hydraulics, hydrology, CFD and pollutant transport in streams are also available to researchers.
Master's degree admissions requirements:

- Meeting all other requirements for admission to M.S. program
- Secure a Ph.D. Advisor from the Faculty of Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering
- Visit the Funding and Research Interests tab to identify a faculty member with similar research interests as a potential Ph.D. Advisor.
- Contact the faculty member by email. Include a copy of your transcript and resume. If they are willing to serve as your Ph.D. Advisor, seek confirmation.
- Once you have an agreement, notify Jeannie Werner of intent and/or outcome by email.
